Hawcoat Park

Sports Club

Hawcoat Park Sports Club (still known to many locals as Vickers Sports Club) is a truly unique facility in Barrow in Furness. The club comprises 15 acres of playing fields and caters for a variety of sports at both Junior and Senior levels. Sports played at Hawcoat Park include Archery, Bowls, Cricket, Football, Rifle and Pistol shooting, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Table Tennis and Tennis. Walney Terriers American Football team have also recently allied themselves to the club in a move to have facilities which will allow their selection to the league.

The facility is located in the Hawcoat Ward but is available for use by anyone through membership or by paying a day rate for certain sports such as Bowls or Tennis.

The management of the Club was transferred from BAE Systems to the membership in January 2008 operating a “Gentlemen’s Agreement” between the two parties with an intention of formalising this into a long-term Lease agreement within a few months. This meant Hawcoat Park undertook responsibility for running the site, including all clubhouse activities and maintaining the grounds for the use of the local community. BAES supported this arrangement with a limited financial package and a promise to maintain the site to expected legal compliance in terms of Health, Safety and Environmental considerations.

Hawcoat Park has continued to operate successfully under a Board that consists entirely of volunteers giving their time for free. The company is a not-for-profit organisation and employs a small number of permanent staff. A number of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers help with grounds maintenance keeping playing areas as some of the best in the local area.

As of 6th August 2013 BAE Systems gave notice that the present arrangement must cease in approximately 12 months time (date to be finalised) and that they intend to offier the Club to the open market as a going concern on a 25 year full care and maintenance lease at a peppercorn rent (with no financial or operational support from the company).

HPL will have the opportunity to apply for that lease as a preferred bidder. The HPL Board together with the membership are considering their position and a series of member and public meetings are planned.

All the facilities are available to hire for celebrations, conferencing, team-building, sports schools, etc. More details can be found on the Facilities   page.

The club welcomes both members and non members alike. However, our members enjoy preferential rates at the well stocked bars. Membership is a pre-requisite to participating in a sport affiliated to one of the sections of the club (see the Membership page for details and forms).

How Can I Help Secure the Club?

The information featured here will alter as the situation is better understood but.......

At present the directors are working on understanding exactly what the BAE announcement means in terms of additional finance per annum. HPSSC has already launched a new lottery scheme (Unity) which is seen as a step on the path to obtaining the additional funds. You can help by joining the scheme which costs £1 per week which also gives the opportunity to win £25,000. Details on the Unity Lottery can be found on the right hand side of this web page.

You could also join the club as a member and come along and enjoy the facility as often as you can.

You can also help publicise activities at the club which are organised to generate additonal income.

Don't just think about helping... Get involved now or Barrow may lose this fantastic facility.

Hawcoat Park Sports Club need to find additional methods of income in order to be able to keep the gates open.

To this end Hawcoat Park are now running a Unity lottery. This lottery is open to members, family, friends, work colleagues, well wishers and supporters of Hawcoat Park in short EVERYONE.

Prizes are between £5 and £25,000 each week. Further information can be found here.

The club hope to reach a total draw membership of 850 numbers. The Unity draw will feature prominently for the future of the club.

The tracker below shows how we are performing against our target.
